Jawbone of an Ass
Our Price: $15.50

This Conga is all alcohol, percussion and one Chinese Trumpet. So says Ariel Fiallo Arias, a citizen of Santiago, in describing a music almost singularly identified with his homeland. With melodic roots in Spain and rhythmic roots in several African nations, the music is infectious, whether performed by a "roving carnival band" or for nightclub audiences. Liner notes tell us that the title of the album comes from a "real jawbone from a real ass" that is played like a percussion instrument and makes a rattling sound like a ratchet. East Indian Drums of Tunapuna, Trinidad
Our Price: $15.50

The East Indian presence has not completely dissolved into the Trinidadian soil; remarkably, though one might think first of the African elements imported to the West Indies, East Indian traditions have remained strong from the time European colonizers first brought a work force from Asia to the Caribbean after the abolition of slavery in the mid 19th century. This explains why these Islamic drumming practices have been recorded in Tunapuna. The six-man ensemble plays three tassas (small drums about the size of snare drums), two ghang (cymbals) and the dhole (a small but deep bass drum slung around the neck of the player). Epilogue to the String Band Tradition
Our Price: $15.50

The Grand Curucaye String Orchestra performs lively old-time Spanish dance music, now a nearly forgotten genre. What is notable about this music is that string instruments are plucked rather than bowed in order to focus more on the element of rhythm. Banjo leads the ensemble, which also includes cuatro (a strummed stringed instrument similar in shape to a ukulele or guitar) and cello (played by slapping the strings). Montoya
Our Price: $15.50

Carlos Montoya has a legendary name in flamenco: his uncle Ramon was regarded as the foremost flamenco guitarist of his generation. Yet this namesake was a handicap early in the younger Montoya's career, one which he adroitly overcame. Performing "real" Andalusian flamenco on solo guitar, some of these gypsy tunes originated in the regions of Aragon and Linares while others reflect Moorish or even Cuban influence; some take on dance forms like the rumba or tango. Montoya performs passionately and persuasively. Artist: Carlos Montoya Released: Record Company: Cook Records
